In 2016, Texas entrepreneur Al Micallef, a businessman with ventures in ranching and fine dining, struck up a conversation with two men at a cigar lounge and quickly realized he was talking with master torcedores from the Gómez Sanchez family, multi-generational Cuban cigarmakers whose heritage in tobacco dates back to Cuba in 1934.

Impressed by their rolling skill and tobacco knowledge, Micallef knew he had stumbled onto something rare. He negotiated on the spot and placed an order for 1,000 custom cigars rolled by the family. The cigars they created for him became the brand's flagship and most premium blend — the Micallef Reserva Limitada Privada — and the partnership officially became Micallef Cigars in 2016, with production at the family's factory in Estelí, Nicaragua.

That origin still defines the brand: Cuban-rooted craftsmanship, small-batch production, and family involvement in every blend rather than mass-market distribution. It means many smokers in Louisville, KY and the surrounding region may not have encountered Micallef at larger retail chains.
